THEY WERE VERY GRATEFUL AND PLEASED. IT WAS PUT TO THE FLOOR WHETHER WE SHOULD KEEP SUMMER LEAGUE AS A CHARITY RAISING LEAGUE. KEEP AS A CHARITY LEAGUE VOTED FOR UNAMINOUSLY. PRESIDENTS ADDRESS: It’s my job to sum up on the year. It started with me proposing that we stick to playing nine singes and no good would come of moving to six singles and three doubles. Well . . . err. After a season of diminishing teams, I’ve changed my mind, I don’t believe there is now an alternative. Later in the agenda there is an opportunity to go through your committee’s ideas on how to stem the decline in team numbers although when I say committee there were only four of us there – there should have been five officers and five members of committee, another problem we must address later. Enough of that for now, let me congratulate Phil Reed’s West B for winning the first division and Pete Chown’s Legion A for being so nearly champions yet again. It was Andy Coles’ St Thomas A who won the second division with Whipton Social B runners up under the captaincy of Ness Hatch. May I also congratulate the cup winners and runners-up and all those who won a trophy at finals night which was a great success yet again. Finally, may I thank Ross Goyne, Steve Sweetland, and Roger Yeats our officers for such a good job of steering us through the season. And, of course, Phil Reed and Christine Harding our committee members who supported the officers so well. Let’s hope we have a really good productive meeting. Thank you.
CHAIRMANS ADDRESS: ROSS PRAISED THE TEAMS AND PLAYERS FOR THE SMOOTH RUNNING OF THE LEAGUE. HE ALSO THANKED ST. THOMAS SOCIAL FOR HOLDING A SUCCESSFUL FINALS NIGHT. REGISTRATIONS SECRETARY’S ADDREESS: ROSS STATED THAT THE WAY RESULT CARDS ARE BEING SENT, IS A GREAT SUCCESS AND MADE HIS JOB EASIER. EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE TAKING PHOTOS OF CARDS AND SENDING THEM TO HIM. TREASURERS REPORT: ROGER PRODUCED A NON-AUDITED ACCOUNTS A COPY OF AUDITED ACCOUNTS WILL BE ISSUED TO TEAMS WITH WINTER REGISTRATION FORMS. FUNDS WERE DOWN, BUT HEALTHY. THESE ACCOUNTS WERE PUT TO THE FLOOR. PROPOSED BY MO, SECONDED BY PHIL. SECRETARYS REPORT: THIS SUMMER SEASON HAS SEEN THE INTRODUCTION OF TWO NEW TEAMS, WHICH WE HOPE WILL STAY FOR THE WINTER SEASON. ONE OF THESE TEAMS IS FROM OUTSIDE OUR FAMILIAR BOUNDARIES, WE WELCOME TOPSHAM CONSERVATIVE CLUB TO OUR LEAGUE. STRETCHING THE AREA THAT OUR LEAGUE IS BASED IS PERHAPS SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD LOOK AT IN THE WINTER. THERE IS CONCERN ABOUT THE TURNOUT AT THE INDIVIDUALS AND PAIRS COMPETITIONS. THE ENTRIES ARE ABOUT THE SAME AS LAST YEARS, BUT THE FOUR VENUES WERE NOT ATTENDED WELL. THIS COULD BE DOWN TO POSITIONING IN THE FIXTURE LIST TO CLOSE TO THE CHRISTMAS BREAK. SUMMER LEAGUE: FOOTBALL CAUSED A FEW PROBLEMS WHICH MEA THAT THE MISSED FIXTURES WILL BE PLAYED AT THE END OF SEASON. HONORARIUMS: IT WAS PROPOSED THAT THE HONORARIUMS SHOULD REMAIN THE SAME. ROGER SAID THAT HE WOULD FORFIT HIS THIS SEASON, AND GAVE AN EXPLAINATION WHY HE WAS DOING SO. PROPOSED BY JENNY, SECONDED BY PAT. PROPOSALS; COMMITTEE PROPOSED THAT WE REVERSED THE DECISION ON NOT CHANGING FROM 9 SINGLES TO 6 SINGLES AND 3 PAIRS FOR 5 YEARS. THIS GAVE THE COMMITTEE FLEXIBILITY ON GOING FORWARD IN THE FUTURE. PROPOSED BY ROSS, SECONDED BY STEVE. IT WAS PUT TO THE FLOOR, THE DECISION WAS TO REVERSE THE RULING. COMMITTEE PROPOSED THAT WE SHOULD CHANGE PLAYING FORMAT FROM 9 SINGLES TO 6 SINGLES AND 3 PAIRS. THE CAPTAINS STILL PLACING THE PLAYERS ON WHEN THEY WANT. THE GAMES WILL BE , SINGLES 301 BEST OF 3, DOUBLE START. THE PAIRS WILL BE 501 BEST OF 3 DOUBLE START. PROPOSED BY STEVE, SECONDED BY ROSS. PUT TO THE FLOOR THE VOTE WENT TO CHANGE THE PLAYING FORMAT TO 6&3. STEVE PROPOSED, THAT CAPTAINS SHOULD BECOME COMMITTEE MEMBERS, THIS WOULD HELP WITH OFFICIATING AT SINGLES AND PAIRS EVENTS. ALSO IT WOUL HELP TO ARGUE THE CASE OF ALLOCATING EVENTS INCLUDING FINALS NIGHT. THE FLOOR DECIDED THAT THIS WOULD NOT BE VIABLE, THEY PROBABLY NOT TURN UP ANYWAY. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: IT WAS DISCUSSED ABOUT INCREASING THE CATCHMENT AREA OF THE LEAGUE, IT WAS STATED THAT MOST PEOPLE DID NOT MIND TRAVELLING TO TOPSHAM, AND MAYBE BROADCLYST. IT WAS LEFT FOR THE COMMITTEE TO DECIDE. CLUBS IN PUBS IT WAS DECIDED UNNAMINOUSLY AGAINST CLUBS RUN IN PUBS. SOCIAL MEDIA PHIL’S IS GOING TO ADMIN A FACEBOOK ACCOUNT. THE RUNNING COSTS ARE GOING TO BE SORTED OUT. THE RESULTS WILL STILL BE ON LEAGUES WEB SITE. THIS WAS VOTED IN. DIVISIONS: DEPENDING ON HOW MANY TEAMS ENTERS, BUT IF NUMBERS ARE LOW AND IT WILL BE STRUGGLE TO FILL 2 FULL DIVISIONS, IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT THE FIRST DIVISION WILL BE OF 6 TEAMS, PLAYING EACH OTHER 4 TIMES. THE REMAINDER WILL GO INTO SECOND DIVISION AND PLAY TWICE. THIS CANNOT BE FINALISED UNTIL THE REGISTRATION FORMS HAVE BEEN SENT IN. COST OF PLAYING: THIS WILL REMAIN AT £55 FOR 12 PLAYERS DESPITE THE CHANGE IN PLAYING FORMAT. IT WAS ALSO DISCUSSED ABOUT ARRANGING A DISCOUNT WITH TAXI COMPANIES FOR TRANSPORT TO AWAY MATCHES. TALKS WITH TAXI COMPANIES AND CLUBS NEED TO TAKE PLACE ON THIS. MINUTES OF LAST AGM.
THIS WAS READ OUT BY STEVE SWEETLAND. THIS WAS PROPOSED A TRUE STATEMENT BY STEVE KINGDON, AND SECONDED BY LEIGH BENNETT.
MATTERS ARISING.
NO MATTERS ARISING.
PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS
Welcome to our Annual General Meeting.
We had a great winter season with Phil Reed’s West B crowned champions from runners-up Labour A. In the second division, it was Chris Harding’s St Thomas B coming out on top and also winning the cup. New team, South, were runners-up and also cup runners-up. The first division cup was won by West D with runners-up Labour A.
We had eight teams in both divisions which has got to be the minimum really and we’re in trouble in the summer league also with only one division of ten – three season’s back there were two divisions of ten.
We are to discuss this issue later tonight.
Back to last season where finals night was held at the Labour Club. It was well organised by Scott Foggin and his team and we thank them for that. The mixed doubles competition was another win for the league and the Charlie Knight was as popular as ever.
Thanks to your committee for all their hard work – we can always do with more members on the committee of course. Unfortunately, our chairman, Allen Matthews, resigned part-way through the season and Ross, as deputy, took over the reins in addition to carrying out his duties as fixtures secretary - and a cracking job he has done too. Can I thank both Steve Sweetland our registration secretary for performing his job well in sometimes difficult circumstances and I won’t forget to thank Roger Yeats whose job is largely behind the scenes making sure we get our money in and paying our way. Christine Harding, Phil Reed, Lee Bennet and Scott Foggin are the members of our committee and they work as hard as anyone officiating at our many competitions, many thanks go out to them and everyone who helps the league.
To finish, our league is suffering no more than others, we have a very friendly atmosphere in all our teams, our committee and officers are enthusiastic, we are well funded and all-in-all I am optimistic for the future.
Thank you.
CHAIRMANS ADDRESS.
ROSS THANKED THE COMMITTEE FOR THE WORK DONE IN THE SEASON. HE ALSO THANKED THE CAPTAINS AND PLAYERS FOR HELPING TO MAKE THE SEASON RUN SMOOTHLY. HE SENT THANKS TO SCOTT FOGGIN AND LEIGH BENNETT FOR THE RUNNING OF FINALS NIGHT. WHICH RAN SMOOTHLY AND ON SCHEDULE.
REGISTRATION SECRETARY’S ADDRESS.
THE CARDS NOW BEING SENT BY E MAIL AND TEXT HAS WORKED WELL AND NO PROBLEMS EVERYTHING HAS ARRIVED TO HIM BY THE THURSDAY MORNING. HE STATED THAT CAPTAINS SHOULD NOT RELY ON POST, AS THEY COULD ARRIVE LATE AS MONDAY MORNING.
TREASURERS REPORT.
ROGER SAID IT WAS A PRETTY MUCH STANDARD SEASON, AND WE JUST ABOUT BROKE EVEN. THE ACCOUNTS WERE PROPOSED TO BE TRUE BY PHIL REED AND SECONDED BY LEIGH BENNETT.
SECRETARY’S REPORT.
AS WELL S DOING HIS DUTIES AT MEETINGS, STEVE IS TRYING TO CANVASS TO GET MORE CLUBS TO JOIN THE LEAGUE. ALTHOUGH CLUBS HAVE FACILITIES, THEY DO NOT HAVE PLAYERS TO COMPETE ON A REGULAR BASIS. HE SAID THAT HE WILL CONTINUE TO SEARCH FOR MORE MEMBERS.
REPORT ON SUMMER LEAGUE.
PLAYERS ARE FINDING IT AN ENJOYABLE LEAGUE TO TAKE PART IN AND IS BASICALLY RUNNING ITSELF.
HONORARIUMS.
IT WAS PROPOSED THAT THE HONORARIUMS SHOUD STAY THE SAME, PROPOSED BY CHRIS HARDING, SECONDED BYSTEVE KINGDON.
MIKE LONG STATED THAT THE HONORARIUMS SHOULD BE REFLECTED ON BY HOW MANY TEAMS TAKE PART IN LEAGUE.
AMMENDMENT TO RULES.
TONY READ OUT HIS PROPOSAL TO KEEP THE FORMAT THE SAME, 9 SINGLES, 301, DOUBLE START. HE HAS DONE RESEARCH OF LOCAL LEAGUES OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS, AND WHERE LEAGUES HAVE CHANGED THE PLAYING FORMATS IT HAS NOT STOPPED THE DECLINE IN THE AMMOUNT OF TEAMS TAKING PART. THIS RULING IS TO STAY IN PLACE FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS.
THE VOTE WENT 4 FOR AND 1 AGAINST.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
THE PRESENT OFFICERS ARE HAPPY TO CONTINUE IN CURRENT POSITIONS FOR A FURTHER YEAR. PROPOSED BY TERRY PATCH AND SECONDED BY STEVE KINGDON.
AOB
THE CHARITY FOR THE SUMMER LEAGUE THIS SEASON WAS PROPOSED BY ROSS, THE CHARITY BEING, CLIC. THE VOTE WENT A MAJORITY FOR.
BECAUSE OF DIFFICULTY IN SELLING ROLLING DRAW, IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT THE LEAGUE INTRODUCED A REPLACEMENT. EACH TEAM CAPTAIN WILL BE GIVEN 3 FOOTBALL CARDS TO SELL DURING THE SEASON. THE CARDS DO NOT HAVE TO BE SOLD ON ONE NIGHT, BUT OVER THE DURATION OF SEASON. THE CARDS WILL BE MARKED EXETER SPORTS LEAGUE. IF THE TEAMS WERE SOLD AT 50p A GO, EACH CARD WOULD RAISE £10 TOWARDS THE LOSE OF ROLLING DRAW. IT WAS VOTED TO GIVE THIS A TRY THIS SEASON.
TERRY PATCH SAID THAT THE WEBSITE IS GOOD BUT RECENTLY THERE HAVE BEEN NO WRITE UPS ON MATCHES LIKE THERE HAS BEEN IN THE PAST. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE AVERAGE SHEETS SHOULD BE CUT DOWN TO TOP 25. HE SAID THAT SOME OF THE PLAYERS AT THE BOTTOM END, WOULD SOONER NOT BE ON THE LIST AT ALL.
THANKS WENT OUT TO ALAN AND KAREN MATHEWS FOR DOING THE AVERAGES OFF THEIR OWN BACK AND FOR SUPPLYING TROPHIES.
TONY STATED THAT THE AVERAGES DO NOT COME UNDER THE LEAGUE, AND ROSS SAID THAT IT WOULD PUT MORE PRESSURE ON COMMITTEE. IT WAS AGREED THAT KAREN WOULD NEED TO BE E-MAILED RESULT CARDS IN THE SAME WAY AS THEY GO TO ROSS, SO THAT SHE COULD KEEP AVERAGES UP TO DATE. PLAYERS NOT WANTING TO BE INCLUDED ON AVERAGE SHEETS WILL BE GIVEN THE OPTION TO OPT OUT.
PHIL REED SAID THAT A CONTRIBUTION SHOLD BE MADE BY LEAGUE TO COVER COSTS OF TROPHIES. THIS WILL BE DISCUSSED AT NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING.
THE COMMITTEE NEEDS NEW UP TO DATE CONTACTS, E MAILS, MOBILE NUMBERS OF CAPTAINS.
MEETING CLOSED 8.54PM |

Minutes of 2014-15 Annual General Meeting | 2014/15 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. TRANSPORT CLUB. TUESDAY 21/07/2015. MEETING OPENED @8.05PM.
COMMITTEE PRESENT: MICKY FINN, STEVE SWEETLAND, ROSS GOYNE, ROGER YEATS, TONY GRABHAM, PHIL REED, ALAN MATHEWS. PRESENT ON FLOOR: ARTHUR, ANDY[ST THOMAS], MANDY[WIPTON SOCIAL A], KAREN, SHANE[WEST D], CHRIS, MALCOLM[TRANSPORT], SIMON[LABOUR B], TERRY[RBL B], MAZ[WHIPTON SOCIAL B], BOB[ LABOUR A], CHRIS[HEAVITREE], PHIL, LEE[WEST]. APOLOGIES: ALAN WHITEHEAD, IAIN SWEENY. MINUTES OF LAST AGM: DECLARED TRUE, PROPOSED CHRIS HARDING, SECONDED SIMON COOKSON. PRESIDENTS ADDRESS: What a year we’ve had, the winter league was another great success with West A just pipping West B for the title and we all enjoyed their captain Paul Godbeer’s Karaoke performance at finals night. Another West team the D side won division two with Labour B runners up which was also the second division two cup result. The first division cup was won by Labour A with runners-up Heavitree. We had a new competition, the mixed pairs, held at the end of the season which saw a real party atmosphere out at Whipton Social Club I for one hope it becomes an annual event. Finals night was again a great success down at St Thomas Social Club where they looked after us well and one which I’m sure everyone enjoyed. Thanks go to Micky who marked the board all night, to Andy Maddicks for MC-ing the event and of course to Mandy Sweetland for badgering us all selling the rolling draw. And we got our Charity Summer League off to a good start with another new arrangement of having play-offs for the first and second division with a Grand Final to decide the Champion of Champions. I hope we get a good turn out and raise loads of money for the Devon Air Ambulance. Thanks to your committee for all their hard work - we are lucky to have them. This is Micky Finn’s last AGM. Micky has been Chairman for the last two years and he is stepping down to take it easy. Can I thank both Steve Sweetland our registration secretary and Ross Goyne our Fixtures Secretary on performing their jobs very well in sometimes difficult circumstances. I’m sure we all want to thank Roger Yeats who job is largely behind the scenes making sure we get our money in and paying our way. We have too few members on our committee - Allen Matthews, Phil Reed, Scott Foggin – of course we need more members one from each team is ideal, and here’s an idea, perhaps all captains are automatically on the committee? Perhaps we send them all an invitation each time we hold a committee meeting? Another concern is of course is the gradual erosion of our game. Last year we had 10 clubs and 19 teams. This summer we’re down to 16 teams from last year’s 20. If we are to reverse this trend our league must be pro-active in encouraging more clubs and teams to enter – it’s no good sitting back and waiting for the entry forms to come in. To finish, the standard of darts in our league is second to none; we have a healthy bank balance and an enthusiastic committee - all things are possible! CHAIRMANS REPORT: MICKY THANKED ST THOMAS SOCIAL CLUB, AND ALL THE STAFF WHO WORKED ON THE FINALS NIGHT, WHICH MADE IT A GREAT NIGHT. HE ALSO THANKED ANDY MADDICKS, FOR THE GREAT JOB HE DID AS OUR MC.HE THANKED THE COMMITTEE AND THEIR HELPERS FOR THE SMOOTH RUNNING OF THE LEAGUE WHICH WAS A GOOD SEASON, WITH VERY FEW PROBLEMS.THE ONLY COMPLAINT RECEIVED WAS THE LACK OF PAPERWORK BEING DELIVERED TO CLUBS, EVEN THOU IT’S THE AGE OF THE INTERNETPEOPLE STILL WANT TO HAVE PAPER COPIES TO PUT ON NOTICE BOARDS. HE FINALLY REVEALED THAT HE WAS STANDING DOWN AS CHAIRMAN, AND LEAVE THE COMMITTEE. HE SAID THAT HE HAD ENJOYED HIS TIME IN OFFICE, AND HE HAD MADE A LOT OF GOOD FRIENDS OVER THE YEARS. HE FELT IT WAS TIME TO HAND OVER TO SOMEONE ELSE.HE WISHED THE COMMITTEE AND LEAGUE CONTINUED SUCCESS. THANK YOU. THE FLOOR THANKED MICKY, FOR THE INPUT THAT HE HAD PUT INTO THE LEAGUE, AND WISHED HIM GOOD LUCK FOR THE FUTURE. FIXTURES SECRETARY: ROSS STATED THAT EVERY THING RAN SMOOTHLY, AND THERE WAS NO LATE CARDS, AND NO PENALTY POINT DEDUCTIONS. HOWEVER SOME CARDS WEER NOT FILLED IN PROPERLY AND SOME NAMES WERE NOT FILLED IN CAPITALS AND WERE UNREADABLE. REGISTRATION SECRETARYS: STEVE STATED THAT MORE EFFORT WILL GO INTO GETTING PAPERWORK TO THE CLUBS INSTEAD OF TOTALLY RELYING ON THE INTERNET. OTHER THAN THAT EVERYTHING RAN QUITE SMOOTHLY. TREASURERS REPORT: ROGER TOLD THE FLOOR THAT TROPHY INSURANCE WAS NOW NULL AND VOID DUE TO A PREMIUM OF £800. ALSO HE STATED THAT IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO MAKE A CLAIM DUE TO LOCATION OF TROPHY AT TIME OF LOSS. SOME CLUBS ARE UNAWARE THAT THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR LOSS IF THE TROPHY IS BEING KEPT ON THEIR POPERTY. THE BANK ACCOUNTS AGAIN SHOWED A HEALTHY BALANCE. THE FLOOR SUGGESTED THAT THE COMMITTEE SHOULD LOOK INTO THE INSURANCE OF TROPHIES. PROPOSED, ROSS GOYNE, SECONDED, PHIL REED. HONORARIUMS: TO BE KEPT THE SAME AS LAST YEAR. ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE: CHAIRMAN- ALLEN MATHEWS WAS ELECTED. PROPOSED ROSS GOYNE, SECONDED MICKY FINN. VICE CHAIRMAN- ROSS GOYNE WAS ELECTED PROPOSED PHIL BARRETT, SECONDED BOB SANDFORD. ALL OTHER POSTS WERE KEPT AS LAST YEAR. NEW MEMBERS: ARTHUR JONES, PROPOSED PHIL BARRETT, SECONDED STEVE SWEETLAND. CHRISSY HARDING, PROPOSED ROSS GOYNE, SECONDED MICKY FINN. NEW CHAIRMAN TAKES THE CHAIR @8.45PM PROPOSALS: ALAN WHITEHEADS LETTER WAS READ OUT TO THE MEETING, HE WAS ASKING FOR PAYMENT OF OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES HE HAD INCURRED WHILE HE WAS SECRETARY. CHRIS HARDING SAID THAT ALAN SHOULD GIVE US A FIGURE OF WHAT HE WAS EXPECTING. HE HAS NO RECEIPTS TO SHOW THE COMMITTEE.A PROPOSAL WAS MADE TO MAKE AN OFFER OF £20.PROPOSED ANDY COLES, SECONDED SIMON COOKSON. THIS WAS PUT TO THE FLOOR AND CARRIED. THE COMMITTEE WAS TOLD TO DEAL WITH THIS. ALAN MATHEWS PROPOSED A CHANGE TO FORMAT OF LEAGUE, HE PROPOSED THAT THERE COULD BE 3 DIVISIONS, EACH TEAM WOULD MEET 3 TIMES HOME, AWAY NEUTRAL. A CAPTAINS GAME COULD TAKE PLACE AT BEGINNING OF MATCH AND CARRY AN EXTRA POINT. IT WAS DISCUSSED, AND DECIDED THAT THIS CANNOT BE LOOKED AT UNTIL 2017. ROSS GOYNE AIRED HIS VIEWS ON SO CALLED FIXED OCHES, WHICH ARE BEING MOVED DURING GAMES. A FIXED OCHE SHOULD BE FIXED SO THAT IT CANNOT BE MOVED DURING PLAY. ANY OTHER BUSSINESS: NONE. MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED. MEETING CLOSED @9.20 PM

2014-2015 Finals Night winners, etc. | Was it just good or was it a brilliant night out? Finals Night was a night out to be savoured, the standard of darts excellent, the atmosphere excellent, the venue excellent, the organisation excellent, the marker, our Chairman Micky Finn, and the MC, Andy Maddicks, excellent, and the audience, well, they were really very good too! There were the usual shenanigans from Mal Curran, Dillon Battershill, and Danny Belsten which we all enjoyed, and the bar was well staffed and the BBQ much appreciated, our thanks go to St Thomas Social Club. One welcome item which was not on the running order for the night was West A’s surprise tribute to their long-serving captain, Paul Godbeer, who is standing down after many years of leading an outstanding team. Dillon Batteshill paid tribute to Paul on behalf of the team members commenting on how Paul’s captaincy had encouraged all the team to perform to the highest standards. Paul responded by thanking all the players over the years who had taught him how to lead the team to success – he finished up by singing one of his favourite songs to which everyone sang along to. The Bryan Barrett Story - by Mike Long
A Player with Nerves of Steel A name that has cropped up a number of times in my research for information on other players is the late Bryan Barrett. There is no doubt that among those that knew him he was much admired and well respected not just as a player but as a person. He graced the oches of many a pub and club during a playing career spanning five decades. He earned the reputation as being nerveless and one to rely on in a situation that would test anyone. He played for most of the top teams of the time in and around Exeter, these include pubs and clubs that no longer exist like The Cattle Market in Bonhay Road, The Royal British Legion in Castle Street and the more recently-closed St Loye's Hotel. Among his many trophies are two sports club league individuals won in 1972 and 1974 as well as a Whitbread League mixed pairs with the landlady of the St Loye’s beating Martin and Sue Roads in the final. The old Whitbread league, as I mentioned previously, was a tough league often contested by two teams of players that changed pubs every now and again and I suppose the same happened in the Sports Club League. Two dominant Whitbread league teams for quite a while were the Sawyers and the North Bridge. Brian played for the Sawyers Arms along with Mike Haydon, Dave Grey and Rob Crabtree to name a few if my memory serves me right. It was the Whitbread League individual final against Rob Crabtree that brought Bryan his biggest disappointment after taking the first leg and started with 147 in the second before he let it slip and Rob came back to win. But as usual Bryan had nothing but friendly words and a firm handshake win or lose. Bryan ventured out of Exeter to play with some of his Whipton Labour Club team mates playing for the Stoke Canon Inn in the Cullompton League on Fridays, but it was the Labour Club team that took many honours in the Sports Club League as I mentioned when featuring Charlie Knight. The team included John Grose, Gerry Richards and many others the picture below show some of these and others that I have not mentioned. From this team the first ever Super League Team in Exeter was formed the Exeter Eagles. Having played against them a few years later I can recall players that were exceptional like Norman Spier, Trevor Sprague, John Dawson and John Popjack as well as Bryan. During this period he was asked to represent Devon several times but refused due to the huge expense involved. In those days there were no or very few money competitions so the opportunity to compete with top player’s week-on-week and make a few bob was lost. He regularly reached the News of the World North East Devon finals so was certain to have been in with a chance. Bryan continued to play league darts into his sixties but sadly suffered failing eyesight and was eventually registered as a blind person for the last few years of his life.
He passed away in 2009 aged 72, but such was the respect for him by local players Martin Roads and Kevin Hollamby a memorial blind pair’s competition was set up and has been running for the last few years and I am sure that Bryan would not have missed the irony of the competition title. All the proceeds from these competitions are donated to the RNIB as they were of great help when helping Bryan cope with his blindness through the last years of his life. To date £2,100 has been raised. Thanks to Phil for helping me with information for this article if any one has suggestions for the next feature please let me know. - Mike Long.

Neil Howe, gentleman and a superb player
NEIL HOWE - one of our most talented players In Swindon he played at the Gorse Hill Club in the same team as England international Bob Anderson and also the Duke of Wellington which was apparently owned by none other than that well known celebrity “Dozy” from Dave Dee, Mick and Titch fame. In Bristol he played with another well known international and News of the World winner, Mike Gregory, during this time Neil played for West of England (Avon). On his return to Exeter in 1978/9 he rejoined his Pinhoe local but he was soon approached by Geoff Davey to join top Whitbread League side the Hour Glass in order to boost their already-strong team and try his hand at the highest local level as it was then on Monday nights. These included seven Sports Clubs League pairs trophies with partner Dave Woolacott who has since won three more titles with different partners – Martin Rose, Phil Barrett, and Martin Horn. I am trying to buck up enough courage to show a rather intimate photo of Kevin but I think the results of the Leveson inquiry could lead to prosecution. Or perhaps we could auction the dark secrets for charity - I will have to consult my legal advisor TG first. Another of Neil’s local achievements was winning the Whitbread League individuals, beating Martin Roads with a 170 finish. Then there was the mixed pairs with partner Cath Reed, they beat Roads and his wife Sue in 1985. Still on the local scene, I remember playing in the Express and Echo competition finals at the White Ensign Club in 1983 - my one and only time - where I believe Neil came out the winner. I am sure there were other competitions which Neil won and that I cannot verify. I am hoping that someone has a record of them and can give me dates.
The Kennford Kestrels
Neil and the News of the World competition Neil was no exception having been to London to watch Charlie play, he was desperate to do well and fly the flag for Exeter. He qualified to play in the 1984 Western Region final by beating Ken Barnes, Sid Coull and Sam Mathews from Whimple in the North East Devon final.
Sam was no stranger to the St George’s Hall stage having qualified more than once, while international Mike Gregory did much better by going on to win the National final twice in 1986/7 and 1987/8. Neil’s disappointment was increased because he sailed through the first round without problem, while his likely opponent in the semi-final had struggled, leaving Neil as favourite to reach the final. However, he could not quite put it together and play his normal game, losing what would have been an excellent chance of reaching the grand final in London. President of the Devon County Darts Organisation One competition which seemed to evoke more interest and passion locally and around the country than any other was the News of The World which was played over three legs of 501 from behind an eight foot oche. The competition sadly finally finished in 1996 after a brief return. The competition was organised nationally with regional support, and required players to qualify first from their own pub or club, followed by local heats, and district heats before, in our case, the West of England final. The West of England area covered from Swindon down to the South Coast and over to Cornwall with the winner representing the region in London at the Grand Final. The West Final was always held at St Georges Hall, Exeter, now the Corn Exchange, and Les Treble from the News of the World was the comperé. The final featured a massive electronic darts board with manually operated light bulbs indicating where a dart had landed after it had been called. I mentioned the West of England competition in my articles on Charlie Knight and Martin Roads and I am sure it will crop up again as this was the last hurdle to the national finals of the competition that brought disappointment to many of our finest players.

Martin Roads | |
Arguably the best Exeter player ever
Former Exeter-based darts professional Martin Roads, pictured, is a name you hear little of since he left Exeter some 15 years ago. I was lucky enough to catch Martin on a recent trip to Exeter when he attended a Memorial Service for Devon County Darts stalwart Sue Sercombe who unfortunately died in Spain.
Martin ranks as one of the very best players to grace the local oches having won virtually all of the local competitions most of them more than once and also played with all the top players at home and abroad during the seventies and eighties.
Martin was born in Exeter in 1956 and went to Hele’s School where he learnt to race pedal cars among other things. He first became interested in darts at the ripe old age of six or seven as his father and grandfather both played locally.
He remembers his first league match at the age of 16½ when he played for Civil Service Club, and the Crawford Hotel, captained by, you guessed it none other than George, who apparently would not let him play until he had become accomplished at marking the board and hence knew his numbers as they say in this part of the world. Even then it was only after the game was over that he got the opportunity, until he earned his place along with mate Dave Pill another fine player.
His first full season at the age of seventeen brought interest from other teams and he along with Dave joined the legendary North Bridge team captained by Jim Burns.
First team trophy came along was the Whitbread League second division winners. It was not long before individual trophies followed starting with the Topsham League singles at eighteen years old.
In the same year he won the Brew X1 competition in Paignton. It required a player to score as many elevens as possible with eleven darts with Martin hitting fourteen in the final.
The compare that night was Les Best who ran The Waterloo, a pub in Plymouth, where the Devon Super League and many other competitions were organized.
Martin openly admits that his local role models and those most admired apart from George include Kevin Hollamby, Bryan Barrett and fellow county player Norman Spier. Nationally Eric Bristow and old mate Bobby George are admired most. A Devon County player at 18 At eighteen years old he was spotted by the Devon County selectors after some fine performances in the Exeter and Torbay area competitions and super league representing Exeter Eagles. This culminated in a call from Joan McClintock the then County secretary telling he had been selected for Devon away to Hertfordshire after playing well at the World masters play offs at the Civil Service club beating County players in the process.
The night before the trip to Hertfordshire he played for the North Bridge in the Whitbread cup final against the Polsham Arms at Paignton whose team included well known County players including John McClintock and Trevor Toghill to mention just two. The Northbridge won convincingly.
The following morning Martin was still on a high as the coach departed from the Queen Vic at 8am for the long trip to Hertfordshire and a debut for the County B team at the Shamrock Club Welwyn Garden City beating Eddie English 2-0 and being awarded man of the match. This led to promotion to the A Team on the following day and believe it or not victory over Peter Green 2-0 and A team man of the match as well as overall player of the weekend. Not a bad start to a career in the Devon team that lasted 85 games with 56 victories.
Many memorable games for the County followed the first and the one that stands out is the Devon select team that played a Welsh select team which included Alun Evans Leighton Rees, Tony Ridler and John Asserati. Beating Asserti and being awarded man of the match was nothing more than could be expected from this cocky young lad from Exeter wearing platform shoes. Later to be discarded long after fashion demanded a change, about the same time as the throwing distance changed from 8 feet to 7-9¼ causing more confusion and discontent at having to go “metric”.
The picture is of the County squad, who won the British inter-Counties Division 2 championship in 1982. I wonder how many of the players can be identified from this old newspaper clipping? Martin is pictured with his arm around Joan McClintock Devon darts secretary and regional director of the British Darts Organisation.
Martin who by this time had turned professional and ranked 20 in England had recently learnt that he had been selected to play for Britain against the American Darts organization in Las Vegas with top players like Bobby George, Keith Dellar and Leighton Rees, more about that later.
On the domestic front, Martin was playing Super League for The Exeter Eagles at the Queen Victoria whose landlord Pat Callaghan and wife Kath contributed much to the darts scene with Whitbread league teams playing on Mondays and Sports club teams Steelmen and Steelboys playing in the annexe on Tuesdays.
The pub attracted many of the top players of the time like Bryan Barrett, Norman Spier, John Dawson, Colin Casson, Gary MacMakin, Gerald Richards, Trevor Sprague and Roger Jones who travelled from Ilfracombe to play each week. One of the few trophies to elude him was the super League singles nearest being defeat by Roger Jones in the final in 1977.
In the Exeter local leagues Martin won the Sports Club individuals four times, twice back-to-back 1976/7-1977/9 and 1983/4- 1984/5 as well as numerous other trophies but perhaps he is best known for becoming a professional darts player at the age of 23. Last eight in the British Open He was actually approached to turn professional at the age of 18 by Paul Durrant who owned Durro darts to become a fourth member of “Team Durro” the others being Bobby George, Eric Bristow and Colin Baker. But having met a director to discuss terms he decided with much regret to reject the offer as he was soon to be married and felt probably the time was not right. However, opportunity knocked again some five years later, when Brian Round from BV Supreme approached him and he took the plunge and turned professional, enjoying six years of success all over the UK and abroad. Best performance in a competition has to be the British Open in 1983, when after qualifying the night before for the final 128 he stormed through to the last eight to face well-known international John Lowe. Playing tremendous darts he beat various County players as well as then beating the current World Master Dave Whitcombe with a 132 shot out on the bull and new England cap Rab Scott with clinical finishing and high scoring throughout the game. Martin took the first leg against Lowe and missed double 20 in the second leg to go 2-0 up eventually losing 3-1. Back to local league and cup competitions, during that period there were three competitions that stand out for many reasons. Local newspaper the Express and Echo as well as sister paper the Evening Herald from Torquay ran competitions with heats for house champions to contest before the heat winners met in a grand final with Martin featuring heavily in both. A similar format applied to The Westward TV Championship, the first darts competition to be televised live in their Plymouth Studios. Martin lost in the televised semi-final to Denby Parkin a fantastic player from Cornwall. Other local players who played in the final stages were Eddie Cowley, Trevor Toghill and Sam Mathews from Broadclyst both won the competition in 1975 and 1974 before it finished in 1980 when Westward TV lost its license. Pictured are some of the local darts players from that period. Martin with Colin Casson, Phil Marks, Jumbo Wheatley and Dereck Ladbrook, at what looks like the Civil Service Club. I know Colin and Phil are still around but not sure about Jumbo and Dereck, perhaps someone can let us know. The big National competition with house champions competing in local heats was undoubtedly The News of the World Championship also sponsored by Captain Morgan Rum. A number of elimination heats took place in pubs and clubs around the country, eight players emerging from each area, which were whittled down to the South West finals held at St Georges Hall Exeter with the regional winner taking his place in the Grand Finals in London. A huge electronic dartboard was used to indicate to the crowd where each dart had landed by turning on each individual bulb only as the caller called them. Players that competed in those regional finals included internationals Mike Gregory, Bob Anderson, Paul Gosling from Cornwall as well as locals previously mentioned such as Martin, Sam Mathews and Charlie Knight. Compere Les Trebble was in charge (never found out if it was his real name), anyhow a tough one for anybody to win. Next week in the Martin Roads story Martin hits a low point
News of the World national final so close
During this period Tony Grabham and myself arranged the local heats and worked the big scoreboard which gave us the opportunity to attend the finals in London at various venues but atmosphere was always electric. This gave us the opportunity to meet many of the top players and guests. It is real pity there is no competition or even a newspaper any more.
Picture: A newspaper clipping from the 1982 Exeter & North East Devon News of The World final. Martin next to mate Kevin Hollamby. Russell Carder from Topsham, Roger Manley from Barnstaple on Kevin’s left Roman Bilenkyj from Uffculme, John Dawson from Crediton and Kevin Hardy from Exmouth.
There are many, many more recollections of Martin's exploits and however you look at it he achieved an awful lot in a short space of time before he moved on to pastures new.
As an aside, if anyone has a story to tell or would like any particular player of the past featured please let me know. Look out for the next player to be featured, a lady who was a tremendous player and person the late Kate Budd.

2009-2010 Finals Night Report | Exciting Darts at Finals Night A fantastic night of local darts was enjoyed by many of the league’s players and supporters when the 2009-2010 Finals Night was held at the West Club, Cowick Street, on Friday, May 14th. Everyone was welcomed by the league chairman, Tony Grabham, who took the opportunity to thank everyone who had helped to produce such an enjoyable season, especially Rose and Laurie Parkhouse, and the committee. The evening was brilliantly MC’d by Andy Maddicks and our thanks go to the two match markers, Micky Finn and Phil Reed. The first competition on the programme was the Team Champions’ Cup and the first semi-finalists up were Don Clarke, from Legion, versus Nick Whitehart from Willeys A. Nick took the first leg with Don fighting back to take the second, the third leg was a tight affair with Don taking it after Nick had six darts at double top to claim the game. Second semi was between South’s Micky Eaton and Jubilee A’s John Breban. In a two-leg game Micky came out on top after John had starting trouble. Later in the evening in the final, Don won the first leg going out on double one, but it was Micky Eaton who pulled back to win the second and then the third legs to earn the Champion of Champions crown. Captain’s Cup was the next competition to be decided. Unfortunately Andy Coles, St Thomas B, was unable to be there due to family commitments, which meant that Paul Godbeer, West A had a walk over. The other semi was between West C’s John Seviour and Willeys B’s Ronnie Webb. Ronnie pocketed the first leg and John snatched the second. In a thrilling third leg John started on 120 but Ronnie came down with John and clinched the game going out on double nine to book his place in the final. In the final between Paul Godbeer and Ronnie Webb, Ronnie pulled out all the stops and although Paul had an 85 start Ronnie went out on 80, 5-25-bull! In the second leg it was Ronnie on top form again having an 11-dart leg, starting with 120 and going out on 52. It was the pairs up next with Jason Blatchford and Don Burwood, from Jubilee A, taking on South’s Martin Bevan and Keith Carpenter. The South pairing took the first leg with Jason and Don battling back to take the second. In the all-important third Jubilee won the bull and started first but Martin recorded a 152 start to enable the South pair to catch up. In a scrappy game it was Jason and Don who won through to book their place in the final. The second semi saw another Jubilee A pair, Aidan Mann and Chris Tucker, take to the stage. Up there to fight it out with them was Scott Foggin and his partner Jamie Ripping from Labour B. In an entertaining game which went two legs it was Scott and Jamie who triumphed to earn their place in the final. The final was a tight game between Scott and Jamie and Jason and Don which went three legs with the Jubilee pair of Don and Jason eventually coming out worthy winners. The final competition of the evening to be decided was the individuals. It was contested by Chris Holladay, from Jubilee A, Danny Case, from Labour B, John Breban, also Jubilee A and Mal Curran, St Thomas C. First semi- saw Chris and John go hammer and tongs at it, in a fast and furious game it was John who prevailed, 2-0, to reach the final. Second semi- saw Daniel Case, Labour B, take on St Thomas’ Mal Curran. Danny played well to put one over on a below-par Mal to earn his game against John in the final. In a great final, John got to a double first in the first leg going out on double eight. Dan came back strongly in the second leg and shot out on double two. The third leg saw Dan win the bull and start first with John close behind. John overhauled Dan to get to the double first to shoot out and take the leg, the game and this season’s individual championship. 2009-10 Trophies, Winners, and Runners-up Charlie Knight Triples, for the Cowick Barton Cup: runners-up, Chris Palfrey, Micky Eaton and Martyn Bevan, South; winners, Liam Goyne, Dillon Battishill and Rob Mucklow, St Thomas C. 1001 Plate, the George Godfrey Cup for runners-up, West C; the Reg Bealey Cup for the winners, Whipton Labour Club B.
