West A v West B Could Phil Reed’s West B keep up the pace, unbeaten in eleven games so far but this week away to their A team. A lot of “club pride” was riding on this one and Paul Godbeer and his players will not have wanted to go down easily.
First up for West A as usual was Dave Oak and up to meet him was B’s Martin Horn. Dave was on top form and took the game 2-0 which included an eight-dart leg (115-140-46 out).Paul asked D Belsten to go on second and Phil placed Keith Marden as his opponent. Another bright performance from the A side when D Belsten took the game 2-0 which included a 180. Phil can’t have expected to be two down but things got worse when Andy Taylor went to the oche to play B’s Vince Westcott and came back with the point beating Vince 2-0. Some serious darts required now from the league leaders and Phil sent on Stewart Jones to face P Carter, Stewart took the first leg – the first one of the match for the B side - P Carter the second but it was Stewart who took the third and the B team was up and running. Chris Hunt was on for the fifth game of the match and he was up against Mike Edwards, Mike took the first, Chris the second but it was Mike who took the third with a 116 shot out. Three-two to the home side and Paul sent out Chris Eyre (?) to move the game along for them but Phil sent out Dave Woollacott to challenge him and although Chris got the first leg it was Dave who took the next two to take the point and make the score three games all. Next to go to the board for the A team was Captain Paul Godbeer and Phil matched him with Barry Atkins, Paul played the classic captains’ game and beat Barry 2-0 and the A team was 4-3 up. Now or never for the B team and Phil put on Pat Ellis to face the home side’s Liz MacKay, Pat took this one 2-0 and after eight games the scores were level. On for the decider for the A team was Albert Long and placed against him was John Dawson, there was a huge sigh of relief from the B side as John took the game beating Albert 2-0 to take the points for B and they remain unbeaten. The final score was 5-4 to the visitors but unusually the legs score was 11-10 to the A side. Can I ask that Paul write the first names of his team on the next card as I only have surnames and some of his players’ first names.-Thanks.
St Thomas C v South Bob Sandford took his second-placed South team down to Cowick Street to play Vince Herd’s St Thomas C anxious to take the points and keep the pressure up on West B the unbeaten leaders of the Division. Vince though needed the points to close the gap on South to two points with a game in hand. Tight game in prospect?
Vince asked Garry Wright to open the match for the home team and Bob put up Martin Bevan to oppose him, Martin had the better of the opener winning 2-0. Not happy at being one down Vince took the oche himself and faced Mick Eaton and although Mick took the first leg Vince bounced back to take the last two and the scores were even at one each. Next out of the trap for St Thomas came Liam Goyne and Bob placed Keith Carpenter, Liam played well to take the game 2-0 and St Thomas was 2-1 up. Dillon Battishall was next to the board for St Thomas to be faced by Paul Sparks for the visitors, Paul came out the 2-0 winner in this contest and the scores were even yet again. St Thomas’ Andy Hodge was next up and Steve Sweetland represented the visitors in this two-legger which Steve won. 3-2 up and it was W Hughes to play for South against St Thomas’ Rob Mucklow, Rob did the business in this game winning 2-0 including an eight-dart leg 120-135-46 out. Three-all and step forward Arthur Jones for the home side, Bob asked Chris Palfrey to play this one for the visitors - it was Arthur who came out the 2-0 winner. Four-three to the home side with two games to go, just a few loose ends to tidy up then for Vince’s team? – read on! Captain Bob took responsibility for this vital eighth game and Vince put on Ian Cann to stop him. Bob did what was expected of him and beat Ian 2-0 to draw level at 4-4. Mal Curran was next up, home advantage, no pressure, only one thing - he had to beat Neil Howe to bag the points and Neil wanted them too. Mal took the first leg Neil took the second and then the third. Games don’t get any closer than this and the points went to second-in-the–table South with the games score 11-9.
Labour B v West C A fight for survival as second-bottom team West C visited third-bottom Labour B. At the start of the match Scott Foggin’s Labour team had two points and a game in hand on Jim Seviour’s West team.
Scott asked Colin Edworthy to start the game and Jim Seviour with a full team to pick from put on Chris Williams. Colin took the first leg, Chris the second and the third fell to Chris to put the visitors one up. Darren Edworthy was next up to the oche for the home side and Bob Harris opposed him, another three-legger saw the balance restored, Darren took this one 2-1. Scott put out Terry Bridle to move the game along and Captain Jim stepped out to take him on, Jim took the game 2-0 and put the visitors 2-1 up. Not to be outdone captain Scott “the shot” put himself on to be faced on the oche by Jake Wreford, Scott didn’t fail and took the game 2-1. It’s now two each. The fifth game saw Martin Evans for the home team take on Mike Reed for the visitors; Martin took the first but Mike the next two. Now 2-3 down, out came Jimmy Ripping for the Labour side, Jim sent out Tony Luke for West, and in another three-legger Tony fell, Jimmy took the point and it was all-square again. Up stepped Dan Case for Labour and sent out for West was Beryl Callison, Dan came out the 2-0 winner to make it 4-3 to the home team. Big game next for West and Barry Hayward was asked to face Labour’s Tony Mitcheson. Tony took the first with a tremendous 120 shot-out and all looked well for Labour; Barry had other thoughts, however, and took the game 2-1. Game on now at four-all and not a game for the feignt-hearted, Any Spry was the player selected for the home side and Laurie Parkhouse was asked to do the business for West, Laurie took the first, Andy took the second but it was Laurie who took the third finishing with a treble-nineteen, double-16 game shot to take the glory, the game and the points for West. Final score 5-4 and 13-12 in legs to the West.
Willeys’B v Jubilee A Third-placed Jubilee visited Ronnie Web and his mid-table team down at Willeys in an effort to maintain their challenge for second spot. Sam Clemens’ team, placed third and two points behind South, couldn’t afford to lose while it was a crunch game for Willeys, as lose this one and they’re in mid-table mediocrity.
Ronnie asked John Reid to open for the home team and Sam fancied this one himself to set an example for his team to follow, unfortunately for Sam, John was on form and took the opening game 2-0. Undeterred, Sam put Jon Breban forward to face Brian Kemble for the home side and Jon did the job taking Brian 2-0.Eric Sparrow came to the board next for Willeys and Aidan Mann was there for Jubilee, Eric gained this one 2-0 and Willeys were 2-1 up. Roger Clark came to the board for Willeys and Chris Holladay moved up for the visitors Chris took the first, Roger the second and the decider was taken by Chris to put things equal again on 2-2. Dick Dickson was asked to make a difference for the home side and he was opposed by Stewart Jarvis, Dick took this one by the scruff of the neck and returned the 2-0 winner. Three-two up and on came Peter Slader for Willeys, Sam sent on Chris Tucker and although he took the first leg, Peter came out on top 2-1. It’s 4-2 to Willeys and this is the game Jubilee had to win. Up to the board for the home side came John Brealey and Jason Blatchford had the job of stopping him grabbing the points, it was not to be as John played the better darts winning 2-0, completing one leg in eight darts. Ronnie now had the points in the bag but ploughed on sending Nick Towell to play Jubilee’s P Mann taking the game 2-0. Ronnie put himself on in the final game and Dave Burwood came up to challenge him. Ronnie took the game 2-0 to make the final score 7-2 with the games result 15-5.
Second Division Topsham v Willeys A After last week’s triumph over fourth-placed St Thomas B next up to play the leaders was third-placed Willeys A. Steve Kingdon’s Topsham had to keep winning as second-placed Legion, hot on their tail, were on the same points but had a game in hand. Chris Harding’s Willeys team also had to win to narrow the gap to four points with just four games to go.
Nick Wreford had the responsibility to get the game under way for Topsham and he was confronted by Willeys’ captain Chris Harding, Chris got the first leg but Nick fought back to take the second and then the third to give Steve just the start he wanted. Chris needed to get back and put Roger Prout on against Topsham’s Martin Davis and Martin started off well taking the first leg, Roger got the second and the third went to the home team to make the score 2-0. Ryan Kingdon was next up to the oche for Topsham and Haydon Johns was sent out to do battle for Willeys, Haydon took the first, Ryan the second but the third leg went to Haydon and the score was now 2-1. Steve asked Simon Whitfield to represent Topsham next and Warren Jones was out of the trap to face him for the visitors. Warren played well to take this game 2-0 including a 51-bull shot out and the games score was now two each. On fifth for Topsham was Paul White and Ryan Shaddick(?) went to the board for the visitors, Paul took the first leg and Ryan responded taking the second but the third leg went to the home player to put Topsham 3-2 up. Steve placed Lee Wreford for the next game and he was challenged by Angie Moxey, in another tight game the first leg went to Lee, Angie took the second and Lee the third. At four two up Stewart Adams came to the oche for the league leaders and Chris, having to win this one, asked Dan Yelland to do the business for her, unfortunately it was not to be and Stewart had a good 2-0 win to take the point and assure Topsham of another win. Matt Blatchford went to the board for the home team in the eighth game and Nick Whitehart opposed him, Nick had a good game and won 2-0. In the final game the home captain put Keith Chadwick to the oche and Chris put on Patricia Webber, Chris took both legs in this game to make the final score 6-3 with the legs coming in at 13-10.
Legion v Whipton Social A Second-placed Legion hoped for a big win over Stewart Melllish’s bottom-of-the pile Whipton Social A to get their games-for tally up. They were on the same points as leaders Topsham but with a worse games-for balance although Liam Ashmore’s Legion team still have a game in hand.
So at the “Big Game at the Legion” Liam asked R Chudley to go first to the oche to be opposed by Whipton’s Josh Sweetland, Josh lost this one 2-0 and Legion were one up. M Lavis was up next for Legion and Stewart put forward Lee Morris who restored the balance for the visitors. Captain Liam was next to go to the board for Legion and Jim Moore faced him at the board; Liam took the game 2-0 to put the home side 2-1 up. Liam asked D Clark to follow his example but Social’s Roger Yeats had other ideas and took this one 2-1 to make the score 2-2. On came O James for Legion and up popped Anne-Marie Down for the visitors, O James went one up, Anne-Marie took the second leg and then the third to make the score3-2 for Social and put the frighteners on the Alphington side. It was time for veteran George Porter to make his mark on the game and he faced visiting captain Stewart Mellish, Stewart took the first but experience told as George took the next two and the score was 3-3. Step forward Gary Butt for Legion, step forward Chris Down for Social, game on and Garry came out on top by 2-0. It’s now 4-3 to the home side and Legion stalwart Brian Lineham was at the oche to meet Social’s Colin Yeats, Colin had the first leg, Brian the second and the third. Points assured for Legion on came W Chudley and up stepped Mandy Sweetland for Social, Mandy took this final game 2-1 and the final score was 5-4 to Legion with the games score close at 13-10. Can I ask that Liam write the first names of his team on the next card as I only have surnames and some of his players’ first names on the records.-Thanks.
Alphington v St Thomas B After losing 6-3 to leaders Topsham last time out Andy Coles’ fourth-placed St Thomas B were out to get back on track and take the points from an improving Alphington Sports.
Alphington captain, Tony Grabham, keen to get in front sent out “Lucky Eric” Howe to take on visiting captain and unbeaten-in-four Andy Coles, in a tight three-legger “Lucky Eric” did the job and put Alphington one up. Next to the board for the home side was Mary Patch and sent forward for the opposition was Jack McMinn, again unbeaten in the last four games, Jack playing well levelled the scores, taking Mary 2-0. Frank Budd was next to the oche for the home team and he was opposed by Owen Lockyer who took the first and third legs to put St Thomas 2-1 up. Nip and tuck then, and Alphington’s team champion, Mark Boyland, was up to the board for the home team, out stepped Andy McMinn who made short work of Mark winning the game 2-0, the second leg in 10-darts. 3-1 down and time for the captain to show what he could do for the home team, Andy sent out Hadrian Coles to face him and in a long game Tony had the first leg but crumbled to a 2-1 defeat with Hadrian taking the last two legs to put the visitors 4-1 up. Staring defeat in the face Tony sent on-form Roy Hawker out to save the day, John Sutton faced him for St Thomas and true to form Roy took the game to make it 4-2. Paul Tucker, under no pressure, came out to maintain the recovery for Alphington, Andy sent out Matt Hackett hoping to take the points but in a tight game Paul took this one 2-1 to make it 4-3. Thinking that there still might be something in the game for the home team Tony asked Mike Long to try his luck against Aaron Coles but it was not to be and in another three-legger Aaron took the game and the match to add another two points to St Thomas’ tally. The final game of the night saw Alphington’s Dave Tiley go to the oche against Simon Pearce and yet another three-legger saw Simon come out on top to make the final score 6-3 with the games score 14-10.
Jubilee B v Labour D The final game in the division was between strugglers Labour D and Jubilee B. Jamie Coles’ Labour team made the short trip to Pinhoe in the hope of gaining the points and moving away from bottom-placed Social A while hosts Jubilee intended to move up the league after a lean spell recently.
Home captain, Derek Raddon, asked J Allen to kick-off proceedings while Jamie put forward Martin Tuvey who came away with the point winning this one 2-1. Second up for Jubilee was Chris Coombes who faced Labour’s Den Leaman, Chris took the second leg but Den took the game 2-1 to put the visitors 2-0 up. Graham Adams was sent on for the home side to redress the position playing Amy Evans and in a tough game Graham triumphed to make it 2-1 to the visitors. Out came M Hill for the Pinhoe team, Jamie matched with Fred Phillips and in a three-legger Jubilee came away with the point making it 2-2. Up to the oche for the home side came S Partridge and sent out for the visitors was Kev Ware, another tight game going three legs saw the home side take the point and they were now 3-2 up. Labour’s captain Jamie took up the challenge next and Derek put on B George who came up trumps beating Jamie 2-1. Labour now 4-2 down faced the crunch game with Shane Storer and Derek sent out Daniel Case, Shane did the business and pipped Daniel 2-1 to keep the match alive. Captain’s game then for Derek and George Sterry came out of the trap to face him for Labour, in a tight game in which Derek took the first leg it was George who took the game 2-1. Four-all now and all to play for – but it was not to be, as Jubilee had run out of players and it was Labour’s Hilda Sterry who had the walk-over to take the game and the match 5-4. Legs score was 14-12. Can I ask that Derek write the first names of his team on the next card as I only have surnames and some of his players’ first names on the records.-Thanks.
Mal’s little bit of mischief A friend of mine with egg in his hair and beans down his shirt went to the doctor who asked him what was wrong. My friend replied: “I’m not eating properly.”
And one from an occasional contributor . . . Lorry’s laughs A new assistant at the chemist was approached by a customer who had a bad cough. The chemist was fresh out of cough medicine so she gave him a course of laxative tablets. The alarmed pharmacist asked the assistant why she had done this and the new assistant replied:”Well I bet you he won’t cough now!” |

DIVISION ONE
West B v Willeys B At the start of play the league leaders, Phil Reed’s West B, were six points clear of the pack and Willeys A were in mid-table. It was a big ask of Ronnie Webb’s Willeys B to take the points but if they were to challenge for second place, only four points distant, that was the job in hand.
Phil Reed anxious to remain unbeaten at the top asked Dave “the Bear” Woollacott to make a good start for the home team as he went to the oche to play John Reed but John had other ideas and took the first leg but Dave made good and took the second and third legs to put the home team one up. Pat Ellis was next up for West and Brian Kemble came out to meet him for the visitors, Pat tucked this one away 2-0 to put West 2-0 up. Keith Mardon signed the card first for the third game and Nick Towell was sent out for Willeys and took the game 2-0 to get his team off the mark. Phil next asked Mike Edwards to go out and get a point against Willeys Roger Clark which he quickly did winning this one 2-0. Martin Horn came to the board for West in the fifth game to be faced with Dick Dickson for the visitors, Dick got the first leg, Martin the second but Dick snatched the third to make the score 3-2. Stewart Jones moved to the board to play John Brealey in the sixth game, John took the first leg but Stewart triumphed in the second two, scoring a 180 on the way, to make the score 4-2 to the league leaders. Crunch time then for Willeys, 4-2 down and out came Peter Slader to face West’s Barry Atkins, Barry took the first, Peter the second and the third leg went to Barry together with the points to the leaders, now 11 matches unbeaten. Phil asked Jo Harris to play the next game and Eric Sparrow came to the board for the visitors, Eric took this one 2-0. The final game of the night was between John Dawson for West and Willeys’ captain Ronnie Webb, in another three-legger John came out on top to make the final score 6-3 to West B, the legs score was 13-10.
South v West A To have any chance of catching leaders West B, Bob Sandford’s South had to take the points at home against Paul Godbeer’s fourth-placed West A. And after last week’s debacle at the West Club Paul’s team needed to gain the points to re-establish their push up the table.
South’s captain Bob Sandford asked Martin Bevan to get them off to a good start, Dave Oke was the West player trying to stop him, however the game went 2-0 to the home side. One up and out came Mick Eaton for the home side and Paul placed Pete Gregory against him only to also go down 2-0 and for South to go two up.
West C v St Thomas C Mid-tablers St Thomas C visited West C who were desperate to gain points to take them out of second-bottom position in the league while Vince Herd’s St Thomas team needed the points to keep in touch with the pack chasing second place. West C’s captain, John Seviour, asked Laurie Parkhouse to set his team off on the right track by taking on St Thomas’ Dave Herd and he promptly did just that taking the first game 2-0. Not happy with being one down St Thomas came back with Garry Wright playing the home team’s Chris Williams to make the score one each. M Reed was sent out from West C to face Liam “not the Sloth” Goyne in the third game which Liam just won 2-1. So, it was an early captain’s game for John and not to be outdone up stepped St Thomas’ captain Vince Herd – and although Vince took the first leg it was the home captain who took the game 2-1. The fight-back continued when West’s B Hayward took on Dillon Battishall and came out the 2-1 winner. It was now three to two to the home side and Vince had to do something. The answer was to ask Ian Cann to take the oche against the home team’s Jake Wreford, Ian took this one 2-0 and it was three-all. Dave Wreford was next to the board for West to be matched with Arthur Jones and in a three-legger Arthur came out tops. 4-3 down the home team asked Rose Parkhouse to take to the oche and out came Mal Curran for the visitors. Malachy stormed to a 2-0 victory and the game was won. Final game of the match saw Cheryl Parkhouse take on Andy Hodle who took the game to make the final result 6-3 to the visitors. The legs score was 12-8 to St Thomas.
Jubilee A v Whipton Social B Bottom team Whipton Social B made to trip out to Pinhoe to face Sam Clemens’ high-flying Jubilee A team. With seven games to go to the end of the season now was not the time to falter and the pressure was on Jubilee to come away with the points.
Jubilee sent on Dale Morgan to start the proceedings and he was confronted with Social’s Jack Goyne in this two-legger and the home side came out the winners. Captain Sam fancied a game himself and signed the card second to be matched by Whipton’s M McCarthy who won the first leg but Sam came back to take the game 2-1 to put Jubilee two up. Next out for Pinhoe was Chris Tucker and Colin Bending came out for Social, Colin took the first, Chris the second but the third went to the visitors and the score was 2-1.Ordered on fourth for Jubilee was Stewart Jarvis and M Bending came to the oche for Social - Stewart got this one 2-0. Chris Holladay was next to the board to be faced by V Bending and Chris came up with the goods to win 2-0 and make the score 4-1 to the home side. Crunch time for Kevin and he asked Ross Goyne to save the day. Jon Bevan had the task of cementing the points for Jubilee and he did just that winning 2-0 and finishing with a great 117-out. So 5-1 and only pride to play for now for the visitors. Sam put on Jason Blatchford to take on Social’s G Webber, Jason took this one 2-0. With the scores at 6-1 Dave Burwood came to the oche for Jubilee and M Peek for the visitors, another 2-0 to the home side and the score is 7-1. The final game saw A Shand for Jubilee take on visitors’ Captain Kevin Mallett. The first leg went to the home player, the second to Kevin and the third to A Shand. Jubilee go marching on and a miserable result for Kevin and his team. Final score 8-1 to Jubilee A with the legs score 17-4.
DIVISION TWO St Thomas B v Topsham FC After their heavy defeat last week, leaders Topsham were determined to get back on the winning trail when they visited Andy Coles’ third-placed side St Thomas B. But Andy’s team, although four points short of second place, were by no means out of contention for honours. There was a lot riding on this game with second team Legion away to second-bottom Labour D and expected to come away with the points.
Home captain Andy was first out of the blocks taking the oche against Topsham’s Ryan Kingdon and bagged the point winning 2-0. Next up for St Thomas was O Lockyer to be faced by Topsham’s Martin Davis, Martin won this one by two legs to one. Jack McMinn went to the board next for the home side and Steve Kingdon, Topsham’s captain, matched him with Keith Chadwick who took the first leg but it was Jack who took the point 2-1. Andy sent out H Coles to take on Topsham’s Simon Whitfield and it was the visitor who took the game 2-0. It’s now two games all and St Thomas’ Aaron Coles took the oche to play Topsham’s Paul White, the Topsham player took this one 2-0 to make it 3-2 to the visitors. In an attempt to even things up, next on was A McMinn and facing him was Topsham’s Stewart Adams, this game also went to the visitors so it was 4-2 to Steve’s team. It’s now crunch time for St Thomas and the player selected to save the day was S Pearce, Nick Wreford was the man up for Topsham and although S Pearce took the second leg the decider went to Nick who also scored a 180 on the way to his win and the match points. Seven games completed and it was 5-2 to the visitors, Andy asked M Hackett to go to the board next and it was captain Steve who faced him for Topsham, M Hackett took Steve 2-0 on this occasion to make the score 5-3 – but that was as far as St Thomas got as they had run out of players and Matt Blatchford recorded a walk-over to make the final score 6-3 to Topsham with a legs score of 13-8.
Whipton Labour D v RBL Alphington Liam Ashmore and his second-placed Legion team made the trip out to play Jamie Coles’ second-bottom Whipton Labour D team needing a big win to put the pressure on table-toppers Topsham FC after their surprise defeat last week. Going into this game Legion were on equal points with a game in hand over the leaders.
First up for Labour was Amy Evans, George Porter was first out of the trap for the Legion and although George got the first leg, Amy played well to take the second two. Shane Storer came on second for Labour and Liam matched her with O James with Shane taking the game 2-1. Second-top Legion were now two down to second-bottom Labour and Liam felt he had to play the captain’s game and went on against Labour’s T Pyle who took the first leg before Liam woke up to get the last two. Martin Tuvey on fourth for Labour found himself playing Gary Butt for Legion and Gary ran out the 2-1 winner to make it two all. Den Leaman was next up on the stage for Labour and sent out to play him was M Lavis who bagged the point winning 2-0. At 3-2 down Labour captain Jamie put himself on against R Chudley and did what was necessary winning 2-1. Now at 3-3 on came Hilda Sterry to pit herself against Legion’s W Chudley who took this one 2-0. Four-three down and it’s time for L Ware, Labour, to go on stage against Legion’s D Clark who promptly took the game 2-0 and secured the points for the Legion. Final game of the night saw a recuperating George Sterry take to the oche against Legion’s Brian Lineham, George must be better as he won this one 2-0 to make the final score 5-4 to the Legion who keep up the pressure on Topsham FC. Despite holding second-placed Legion to a 5-4 victory it’s still just the two points for Labour and they seem stuck near the bottom of the division. The legs score was 13-10 to Legion.
Willeys A v Gladstones Fourth versus fifth team should produce a good tight match in any league but this one promised a few fireworks after Harry Evan’s Gladstones team took the points off the leaders last week and Chris Harding’s Willeys A big win at Jubilee. All to fight for then.
Willeys captain Chris Harding put herself on first for the second week running in an attempt to get her team up and running, she was opposed by Gladstones’ I Way and it was Chris who came out on top to put the home side one up. Patricia Webber was next out of the traps for Willeys playing Gladstones’ Donna Dunn, Pat had the first leg but Donna came back to take the second, third and the point. Ryan (?) was next up for the home side and B Taylor came up to face him taking the game 2-0. On-form Roger Prout next out for Willeys took on Chris Sanders and came away 2-0 winner. It now two games each and Warren Jones got the nod from Chris to take on Steve Ireland for the visitors, Steve took this one 2-0. Up next for the home side was Nick Whitehart to face the visitors’ A Crocker and although the visitors got a leg it was Nick who got the point to make it three-all. Captain Chris then asked Haydon Johns to do his best for Willeys and he was faced by Gladstones’ captain Harry Evans, in another three-legger Harry took one leg but Haydon got the better of him with two and the point. Score now 4-3 and big gun Eddie Ashton was sent out to save the day for the visitors. Dan Yelland was Chris’s choice for this game and he delivered the game and the points beating Eddie 2-0. Last game of the night saw Willeys’ Andrew Holvey play Alan Whitehead with Alan taking the game 2-0 to make the final score a tremendously tight 5-4 with just the one leg separating the teams (11-10).
Whipton Social Club A v Alphington Sports Bottom of the pile Whipton Social A entertained mid-table side Alphington Sports endeavouring to lift themselves off the bottom of the table while Tony Grabham’s Alphington sought to gain some credibility and maintain their mid-table position after a not-too-bright first half of the season.
Social’s captain Stuart Mellish decided to enlist the help of two ladies of the team in player selection for this match and the “committee” ordered Chris Down to the board for the first game. Up came Frank Budd for Alphington who was promptly sent back again after losing 2-0. One up, the home team put on Mark Bradford to find “Lucky Eric” Howe waiting for him and in a tight three-legger “Lucky Eric” came out the winner. One each, and the committee decided that Captain Stuart Mellish should go on and he was opposed by Terry Parch; in another three-legger Terry came out on top. Next up for the home team was Lee “Wolves” Morris to play the visitors’ Dave Tiley; Lee took this one 2-0 and the scores were level on two apiece. The committee asked Mandy Sweetland to go to the oche next and Tony put on Mark Boyland in an effort to get one up again, Mark duly obliged and won this one 2-0. At 3-2 down next up was Jim Moore for the home team and Mary Patch was asked to oppose him, although Mary took the first leg in a very tight game Jim came through to level the scores at 3-3. Roger Yeats was the next Social player to take to the oche and it was time for Tony to try to play the captain’s game and go 4-3 up. Tony took the first leg but Roger came back to take the second only for Tony to take the third leg and for Alphington to go 4-3 up. So it was decision time again for the selection committee and they decided to field Josh Sweetland for the potential decider and Alphington sent Roy Hawker up to do battle. Josh had the better of the first leg but then faded and good darts from Roy settled the second and third legs for him to take the point and Alphington the match. The final game featured a member of the committee, Annemarie Down who played Paul Tucker in a tense three-legger with Annemarie taking the first leg but Paul taking the other two. So the final score was 6-3 to the visitors with the legs score a very close 13-11. Final quote from the selection committee was: “Stewart, Annemarie and me put ‘em on and we didn’t do a bad job.”
Mal’s little bit of mischief My friend has just got back from the hospital after visiting his wife. He told me she may have pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis – but at the moment it’s hard to say! |

West B v Jubilee A Unbeaten in nine outings and sitting at the top of the league, Phil Reed’s West B played host to Sam Clemens’ third-placed Jubilee B. First up for West B was Dave Woollacott and as usual Sam stepped up for the first game himself, Dave came out the 2-0 winner on this occasion to put the leaders one up. Pat Ellis was on second for West but was beaten 2-0 by Jubilee’s Dale Morgan making honours even. Stewart Jones on next for West played Jason Blatchford and won this game 2-0. West went further ahead after Martin Horn took Jubilee’s Chris Holliday in a tight game 2-1 including a 115 finish, to make the score 3-1 to the leaders. Sam asked John Breban to close the gap which he duly did by taking on and beating West’s Vince Westcott 2-0. Mike Edwards was on sixth for West and Aidan Mann was placed to take him on and in a three-legger Martin came out best to make the score 4-2. Crunch time then and West’s captain Phil Reed stepped up to the oche to play Stewart Jarvis, Phil played the captains’ game beating Stewart 2-0 to take the match and the two points. Next to the board for West was Barry Atkins up against Jubilee’s Chris Tucker and in another three-legger Chris came out the winner. Willeys B v South Second-in-the-table South travelled down to play Ronnie Webb’s mid-table Willeys in search of two points to keep up the pressure on top team West B. But if Willeys put one over on South they would move up one or perhaps two places and equal on points with that night’s opponents. Willeys had a lot to play for. Ronnie sent out Nick Towell for the first game and South’s captain, Bob Sandford, put Martin Bevan on the oche to face him which turned out to be a good decision as Martin beat Nick 2-0 to put the South one up. Brian Kemble came on second for the home team and Bob placed M Eaton, Brian won the first leg but the South player came back to take the game 2-1. Next up for Willeys was Eric Sparrow, and for South up stepped W Hughes, again Eric had the first leg but W Hughes got the other two. The hosts were now three down and worse was to come when Dick Dickinson went the same way winning the first leg but losing the final two to South’s C Palfrey. South were 4-0 up and John Brealey came to the board for Willeys to be faced by Keith Carpenter for the visitors, John took the first leg, Keith the second and John the decider – it’s now 4-1 to South. Peter Slader was next to the oche for Willeys and Paul Sparks was up for South, Paul took this game 2-0 and the points for South . . . and it is back to mid-table for Willeys. Ronnie put on Roger Clarke to try to get some pride back and he played Steve Sweetland who triumphed 2-0. John Reid was asked to play next for Willeys and Captain Bob put himself to the test which he passed winning 2-1. The final game of the night saw Ronnie Webb put himself on but South had run out of players and Ronnie had a 2-0 walkover. Final result was 7-2 to South with the legs score 15-8.
West A v West C Paul Godbeer’s West A were scheduled to play host to stablemates West C captained by John Seviour but unfortunately there was an issue relating to the starting time of the match and no games were played. Only the first A team player was entered on the card whereas John placed his nine players’ names on the card and returned it to me so the result will go down as a 9-0 victory to West C. Let’s all hope that this sad turn of events doesn’t adversely affect the final league table. In this local Whipton derby match captain Kevin Mallett took his team Social Club B who are currently bottom of the first division to take on near neighbours mid-table side Labour Club B. Labour’s captain “Scott the Shot” Foggin asked Darren Edworthy to start the match off and was opposed by Social’s Jack Goyne. Darren came out the winner in this game beating Jack 2-0. Next up for Labour was Martin Evans taking on Social’s M McCarthy and in a tight three-leg game Social came out on top to make the score 1-1. Scott then asked Jamie Ripping to go to the board and he faced M Bending over whom he triumphed 2-0 to put the score to 4-1. Step forward “the Shot” playing the captain’s game against Colin Bending and although Colin had the first leg Scott came back strongly to take the next two to win 2-1 and take the points. At 5-1 Dan Case went on for Labour and Kevin placed M Peek to try to salvage some pride, again Social went a leg up but Dan took the game 2-1. Next to the oche for Labour was Colin Edworthy who took Social’s S Johns 2-0 and in the final game the home team’s Andy Spry also won beating the Social captain Kevin Mallett 2-0. The end result was 8-1 to the Labour Club with the legs score being 17-5.
Gladstones v Topsham FC Second division leaders Topsham visited mid-table side Gladstones in search of two points to put them clear of second-placed Legion who had an open date this week. Gladstones’ captain, Harry Evans, asked A Whitehead to take responsibility for the first game against Topsham’s Ryan Kingdon and he responded with a 2-1 win to put Gladstones one up against the division two leaders. Next up to the oche for Gladstones was Donna Dunn versus Matt Blatchford for the visitors and Donna come out the victor 2-0. Now two games up, it was B Taylor to take to the board playing Topsham’s Keith Chadwick and it was the Gladstones’ player who came out on top in this one also winning 2-1 with another complicated get out – this week it was x10, x6, x17 = 66. The leaders were now three down and it fell to Topsham’s Paul White to pull one back when Paul beat Chris Sanders 2-0 to make it 3-1 to Gladstones. Stewart Adams, Topsham, made it 3-2 when he triumphed over Steve Ireland 2-1. It was captain’s game now for Gladstones and Harry took on Topsham’s Nick Wreford and came out the 2-1 winner to make the score 4-2. In an effort to settle the match in the sixth game Gladstones’ Eddie Ashton came to the oche to play Simon Whitfield and in a tight game Simon took the first leg but Edie took the last two to win 2-1 and the match. Topsham captain Steve Kingdon had left it too late to make a difference to the outcome of the match and playing Chris Pearce also went down 2-1. The final game of the evening saw Rob Bate up against Topsham’s Martin Davis with “Taff” Bate running out the 2-1 winner. Final score was 7-2 to the home team (legs 15-10). And Legion’s captain, Lee Ashmore, must have been happy sitting out his team’s open date, same points and now a game in hand over Topsham. Alphington Sports v Whipton Labour D Labour Club D travelled over the Exe to visit Alphington Sports hoping to add to their tally of points and push them clear of bottom side Social A; Alphington, though, needed the points to put some daylight between them and the bottom three teams. Alphington captain Tony Grabham asked Frank Budd to open the account for the home side and Jamie Coles the Whipton captain placed Amy Evans, Frank did the business and put Alphington one up beating Amy 2-0. Second on for Alphington was Mary Patch playing Shane Storer and she triumphed 2-0 to put Alphington 2-0 up. Whipton Social A v St Thomas B Languishing at the bottom of the league, Whipton Social A played host to Andy Coles’ high-flying St Thomas B, trying to keep up the pressure on the top two teams. Social captain Sam Mellish elected to put J Moore on first, Andy took the opportunity to take to the oche himself and in a three-legger Andy came out with the point to put his side one up. The final score was 7-2 and the legs score 15-8 to St Thomas B. Jubilee B v Willeys A Both teams were marking time in mid-table but a win for Jubilee would put them on the same points as Willeys and a welcome move up the table. Two points for Willeys’ would push them up among the teams chasing the top two who were six points clear of the pack. Jubilee’s captain, D Raddon, went to the oche first and Chris Harding made it a “battle of the captains” also signing the card for the first game. Chris came out the winner beating the Jubilee leader 2-0. Jane Dorothy was next up for the Pinhoe team matched by R Sladdich for the St Thomas team, this time the home player took the game 2-1. Mal’s little bit of mischief My friend, not the sharpest tool in the box, is at the airport with two sacks over his shoulder when suddenly he gets stopped by customs. They search the two sacks and find loads of mobile phones in them. The customs officer asks: “Why do you have all these phones?” My friend replies: “ Well, when I was on my travels in America I got a phone call from my mate back home and he told me that he is starting up a jazz band and could I bring him back two saxophones!” |

Is the Cup and League double a possibility for Phil’s team? | Matches played on Tuesday, January 12th | Well here goes - this is the first report and I hope it’s OK. I’ve had big trouble getting the names right and of course I’ve got some wrong – but you’ve only got yourselves to blame - if you don’t print your name clearly on the card I can’t read it. If everyone could print their first name and surname clearly I would have no excuse for getting them wrong. The good news is that most of the cards arived on Wednesday with the exception of West B v C which duly arrived by email on Thursday. If captains could put any good shot-outs or high scores on the card that would be great and of course if any photos of teams or players would be welcome as it would brighten up the reports. First Division Labour B v St Thomas C Jubilee v South Whipton Social B v West A Under the arches in Cowick Street top of the table West B played stablemates second-bottom West C in one of the West Club Derbys. Cheryl Parkhouse opened for home team West C against B’s P Ellis who won 2-1; the match went 1-1 when Chris Williams took K Mardon 2-0, and C moved in front with B Haywills beating J Dawson 2-1. B then drew level with S Jones beating J Seviour 2-1. The game was nicely balanced when R Harris took to the hockey for C against Dave Woolacott, Dave came out the winner 2-1. It was now down to captain Laurie Parkhouse to pull C back but despite winning a leg he lost 2-1 to V Westcott. With the score now 4-2 to the leaders it fell to Tony Luke to stop the rot but it was not to be as B Atkins won this game 2-0 and took the points for the B team. Playing for pride now D Wreford beat B’s J Harris 2-1 and the final game went to B’s captain Phil Reed when he triumphed over J Wreford 2-0. Legs score was B’s 14 to C’s 10. Second division |
