Exciting Darts at Finals Night A fantastic night of local darts was enjoyed by many of the league’s players and supporters when the 2009-2010 Finals Night was held at the West Club, Cowick Street, on Friday, May 14th.
Everyone was welcomed by the league chairman, Tony Grabham, who took the opportunity to thank everyone who had helped to produce such an enjoyable season, especially Rose and Laurie Parkhouse, and the committee. The evening was brilliantly MC’d by Andy Maddicks and our thanks go to the two match markers, Micky Finn and Phil Reed.
The first competition on the programme was the Team Champions’ Cup and the first semi-finalists up were Don Clarke, from Legion, versus Nick Whitehart from Willeys A. Nick took the first leg with Don fighting back to take the second, the third leg was a tight affair with Don taking it after Nick had six darts at double top to claim the game. Second semi was between South’s Micky Eaton and Jubilee A’s John Breban. In a two-leg game Micky came out on top after John had starting trouble.
Later in the evening in the final, Don won the first leg going out on double one, but it was Micky Eaton who pulled back to win the second and then the third legs to earn the Champion of Champions crown.
Captain’s Cup was the next competition to be decided. Unfortunately Andy Coles, St Thomas B, was unable to be there due to family commitments, which meant that Paul Godbeer, West A had a walk over.
The other semi was between West C’s John Seviour and Willeys B’s Ronnie Webb. Ronnie pocketed the first leg and John snatched the second. In a thrilling third leg John started on 120 but Ronnie came down with John and clinched the game going out on double nine to book his place in the final.
In the final between Paul Godbeer and Ronnie Webb, Ronnie pulled out all the stops and although Paul had an 85 start Ronnie went out on 80, 5-25-bull! In the second leg it was Ronnie on top form again having an 11-dart leg, starting with 120 and going out on 52.
It was the pairs up next with Jason Blatchford and Don Burwood, from Jubilee A, taking on South’s Martin Bevan and Keith Carpenter. The South pairing took the first leg with Jason and Don battling back to take the second. In the all-important third Jubilee won the bull and started first but Martin recorded a 152 start to enable the South pair to catch up. In a scrappy game it was Jason and Don who won through to book their place in the final.
The second semi saw another Jubilee A pair, Aidan Mann and Chris Tucker, take to the stage. Up there to fight it out with them was Scott Foggin and his partner Jamie Ripping from Labour B. In an entertaining game which went two legs it was Scott and Jamie who triumphed to earn their place in the final.
The final was a tight game between Scott and Jamie and Jason and Don which went three legs with the Jubilee pair of Don and Jason eventually coming out worthy winners.
The final competition of the evening to be decided was the individuals. It was contested by Chris Holladay, from Jubilee A, Danny Case, from Labour B, John Breban, also Jubilee A and Mal Curran, St Thomas C.
First semi- saw Chris and John go hammer and tongs at it, in a fast and furious game it was John who prevailed, 2-0, to reach the final. Second semi- saw Daniel Case, Labour B, take on St Thomas’ Mal Curran. Danny played well to put one over on a below-par Mal to earn his game against John in the final.
In a great final, John got to a double first in the first leg going out on double eight. Dan came back strongly in the second leg and shot out on double two. The third leg saw Dan win the bull and start first with John close behind. John overhauled Dan to get to the double first to shoot out and take the leg, the game and this season’s individual championship.

| Knockout Cup Final | |
Bob’s South capture the Cup Was this going to be Bob's opportunity for revenge or would it be a clean sweep of League and Cup for Phil's rampant team? Format was best of nine games x 301 x best of three legs, double start and finish. Captains tossed a coin for placing, with the team winning the toss having the choice of placing first player. Phil Reed won the toss and asked Bob to place his first player. It was Martin Bevan who was chosen to kick off for South; Phil’s choice was Vince Westcott. Vince took the first leg but Martin fought back to take the second and then get the third to put South one up. Phil asked Pat Ellis to level the score taking on South’s Micky Eaton. Pat again took the first but faded in the second and third legs to give Micky, who scored a 180 on the way, a 2-1 win. So Bob was now two up and it was his turn to place a player this turned out to be Gary Blackwell, Big Dave Woolacott waltzed out to take him on for the champions. Gary played well to take the first leg but Dave came back to make it one each. The final leg went to Gary, though, to make the score 3-0. Phil’s turn to put on first and he chose Martin Horn, up against him was W Hughes for South. Martin pocketed the first leg but W Hughes came back to seize the second, Martin captured the third leg to take the game 2-1. The match score is now 3-1 to South and it’s their turn to sign first. Bob chose Paul Sparks and Phil’s man was Mike Edwards. Paul grabbed the first leg, Mike came back to take the second, but it was the South player who nicked the third to put Bob’s team 4-1 up. Crunch time for the champions, 4-1 down they cannot lose the next one. The next game was going to be stressful for whoever got the nod from Phil and the lucky player was Barry Atkins. Chris Palfrey was the South player delegated to stop Barry and take the cup. In a tight high-scoring game Barry took the first leg, Chris got the second with a 136 start, but Phil’s man stopped the rot winning the game 2-1 to make the match score 4-2 to South. Every game was the decider now and after Bob Sandford put himself on it was Stewart Jones for West to take him on. In a three-legger Stewart took the first and last legs to let West live again. John Dawson was the next out to the oche for West and Steve Sweetland joined him for South. John couldn’t stop Steve this time around and Steve took the first and then the second with a 100 shot out. Bob and his team had got their hands on the Knockout Cup and beaten the unbeaten league champions in the process. What a battle these two teams had over the season with West winning the league and runners-up in the cup and South winning the cup and finishing runners-up in the league – can’t be tighter than that!

| 1001 Plate Final | |
Five-nil thumping for West C The 1001 Plate Final was fought out between Whipton Labour Club C and West C. This year the final was played on Tuesday, May 11th, at St Thomas Club, Cowick Street. Format for the competition was 1001, one leg, best of nine legs with the toss of a coin to decide who signed the card first. Scott Foggin, Labour’s captain, won the toss and asked that West sign first.
John Seviour, the West captain, opted for Chris Williams to go first and he was up against Scott’s choice of Darren Edworthy who took the first leg to put Labour one up. It was Labour’s turn to place their player first and it was Martin Evans who went to the oche. Captain John fancied this game himself and went to face Martin, but unfortunately for West it was Martin who came out on top. Mike Reed came to the board next for West and Scott reckoned that their team champion Danny Case was the man for the job, and so it turned out as Danny took the leg to put Labour three-nil up. Labour’s Terry Brindle was next up and anxious to stop the rot John put on Tony Luke. Tony played well but it was four-nil as Terry took this leg also. Lose this one and it’s all over for West, so there was no pressure on Bob Harris, who was John’s choice to play the decider, Scott “the Shot” Foggin was up for this game and the possible glory. Scott took the leg, the match, and the glory for Labour running out 5-0 winners.
