Brian Barrett Testimonial - report from Laurie Parkhouse

Bryan's testimonial raised £780
The Bryan Barrett testimonial blind pairs competition played at G.W.R. Exeter West, on Sunday, February 28th, was assured of some great matches and with some old and some new faces taking part we were not disappointed. The standard of play was of the highest calibre from some of the finest players in the area.

Sponsors Martin Roads and Kevin Hollamby and organisers Laurie and Rose Parkhouse were delighted with the entry of 68 players.

Apart from the final, the highlight of the day was Danny Belston playing whilst holding his daughter in his arms hitting both doubles to win 2-0 plus the only 180 of the day.

The final saw Joe Malony drawn with Andy Steed against Alex Clyburn and Bob Sandford.

The first leg was a close affair with Andy and Joe both missing darts at double top and double ten respectively to allow Alex to step up and take out double ten to win the first leg. The second leg was a close encounter with Andy on 64 and Bob on 54 it was Bob’s throw with his first dart bouncing out he went single 18 for double only to hit another 18 to leave his partner double 9 next throw. With Andy poised to take out 64, 16, 16 double 16 only to miss the double leaving Alex to hit double 9 to take the match, unfortunately Alex hit single 9 single 1 and then single 4 to leave his partner double 2. Joe, with nerves a jangling, had 3 darts to take the match leg and leg but missed double 16 double 8 and double 4 to allow Bob Sandford to step up and take out double 2 with his second dart to win the match and the title.

Phil Barrett, talking on behalf of the family, said it was a great day and was overwhelmed by the support for his father’s testimonial, he thanked the Railway Club, sponsors and organisers for all their hard work and all the people who donated draw prizes. At the end of the day £790 was raised for the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

Charlie Knight finals

St Thomas team win CKT
The final of the Charlie Knight Triples was held at Whipton Labour Club on Tuesday, January 6th. Despite the cold and snowy weather all eight teams of three were there and play kicked off at 8.30 following the draw.

Match rules were 701, straight start, double finish and unique to this competition the teams had to keep the same playing order throughout the evening.

Up first were Brealey, Sparrow and Bradnock to play Mucklow, Goyne and Battishill with Mucklow, Goyne and Battishill coming out the victors 2-0; while up on the stage Eaton, Palfrey and Bevan were fighting it out with Case, Ripping and Foggin with a 2-0 victory for Eaton, Palfrey and Bevan.

Third up Blatchford, Morgan and Mann saw off Edworthy, Edworthy and Spry again by 2-0 while the final first-round game between Bending, Goyne and McCarthy and Belston, Hunt and Oak resulted in a 2-0 win for Belston, Hunt and Oak.

The draw for the semi-finals saw Blatchford, Morgan and Mann losing 2-1 to Mucklow, Goyne and Battershill and in the second semi Eaton, Palfrey and Bevan came away with a 2-1 win over Belston, Hunt and Oak.

The final went to three legs with the team from St Thomas, Mucklow, Goyne and Battershill coming out the victors over Eaton, Palfrey and Bevan to become the 2010 winners of the Charlie Knight Triples competition. They will be presented with their trophy on finals night which this year is to be held at the West Railway Club, Cowick Street on Friday, May 14th.

Congratulations to the winners and to all the finalists who maintained an impressive standard of darts all evening. Talking to Laurie Parkhouse during the evening he tells me that apart from the first CKT competition when 44 teams entered this year was the most successful in terms of entries with 30 teams competing.

Knockout Cup news
Top v Bottom in the Cup

In the first semi- it's Phill Reed versus Kevin Mallett in the Cup. Played on neutral boards the semi-final of the cup features first division top and bottom teams at the Labour Club. Phil's flying West B take on Kevin's Social B for a place in the final.

The second semi-, at Gladstones, is between Paul Godbeer's under-performing mid-table West A taking on Bob Sandford's second-placed South - in the last meeting Bob's lot whacked Paul's team 8-1, should be an interesting game.

The matches will be played on Tuesday, March 23rd and the format for the cup is nine games best of three legs of 301, double start and finish.

Captains will toss a coin for placing and the team winning the toss will have the choice of placing the first player or asking the opponent to do so. Player placing will be alternate for the rest of the match.

AGM update . . .

Brief report on our 2009 AGM

Our AGM was held on Wednesday, July 29th and would you believe it - I was one of the apologies, some say it was nerves others that Ivan Hockey was behind it! Anyway Jan Bridgman stepped in and did a great job, thanks Jan. There is a full report on the meeting on the home page. the main points were:

1 Team entry fees have been raised from £48 to £55 this covers 12 team members and additional team players are now £5 each up from £4. This is the first increase for ten years and we need a few extra pounds to keep the league in a healthy financial position.
2 The team registration forms are now out with your team captain/club and must be returned to Rose at 77 Buddle Lane, St Thomas with the fees by Sunday, August 22nd. Your committee will be meeting on Wednesday, August 26th to form the divisions.
3 Provisional start dates for the league are either September 22th or 29th depending on number of team entries.
4 There was no change from last year in the election of officers and committee.
